Tupac Shakur Murder Trial Opens With Revenge Allegations in Las Vegas

Nearly three decades after the killing of rapper Tupac Shakur, legal proceedings have commenced in a Las Vegas courtroom to evaluate the state’s case against the accused mastermind. Duane “Keffe D” Davis, 63, faces a charge of murder with a deadly weapon, with prosecutors asserting that the offense was committed to further a criminal street gang. Davis has entered a plea of not guilty and faces a potential sentence of life imprisonment if convicted by the jury.

Opening statements delivered by Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal framed the 1996 homicide as retaliation following a physical confrontation earlier that evening. The prosecution presented photographic evidence from a Mike Tyson boxing match on September 7, 1996, alongside video documentation showing Shakur and his entourage involved in an altercation with Davis’s nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, at the MGM Grand hotel.

The proceedings have drawn attention from family members, including Maurice “Mopreme” Shakur and Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur. Security was heightened following an unrelated shooting reported outside the Las Vegas courthouse during a midday recess, prompting an immediate response from local law enforcement.

Security Structures and Record Label Dynamics

As testimony advanced into its second day, proceedings shifted toward the operational structures surrounding Death Row Records during the mid-1990s. Reggie Wright Jr., former head of Wight Way Protective Services, testified regarding his firm’s commercial relationship with the record label. Wright stated that Death Row accounted for approximately 95 percent of his security business and confirmed his inclusion on the label’s payroll.

Testimony also mapped the logistical movements on the night of the shooting. Wright noted that Shakur was scheduled to perform at Club 662 following the Mike Tyson fight and arrived in Las Vegas alongside Death Row co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight. Due to scheduling delays involving Knight, Shakur took a taxi to the venue, while personal security was managed separately through personnel such as Frank Alexander.

The integration of corporate entities, independent security contractors, and gang dynamics forms the evidentiary matrix for the court. The trial will continue through weeks of scheduled testimony examining the intersection of commercial enterprise and criminal allegations.
