SpaceX Stock Plunge Signals IPO Market Caution

SpaceX Stock Suffers Post-IPO Decline

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SPCX) has dropped for seven consecutive sessions, falling 3.3% to $119.85. This moves shares below their initial public offering (IPO) price of $135, reversing earlier valuations.

July losses have erased roughly 27% of the stock’s value, reducing SpaceX’s market capitalization to $1.52 trillion and pushing it below Meta Platforms. Total losses from its June 16 peak of $2.68 trillion now stand at approximately $1.16 trillion.

Technical Setbacks Drive Reassessment

The downturn was catalyzed by the aborted 13th test flight of the Starship rocket on July 16. The last-second liftoff failure erased about $100 billion in market value, highlighting operational and timeline risks.

SpaceX adjusted the propulsion system and scheduled a retest for July 23. This pause underscored aerospace development risks, prompting investors to reevaluate the company’s premium valuation.

Surge in Short Interest

Bearish sentiment has driven a sharp increase in short positions, rising from 40 million shares three weeks prior to roughly 185 million shares—about 29% of the tradable float.

S3 Partners estimates these short positions total $25 billion in bearish bets. Ortex Technologies reports short sellers have realized an estimated $8.7 billion in paper profits since the IPO.

Broader IPO Market Implications

SpaceX’s post-IPO contraction indicates shifting sentiment toward high-valuation companies, suggesting the offering was priced above current operational realities.

This correction may lead investors in capital-intensive sectors to demand clearer pathways to profitability and verifiable operational stability before backing premium-valued IPOs.
