Peter Katsis, a veteran music industry executive whose 35-year career spanned artist management, A&R, and booking agencies, died Thursday in Los Angeles at age 69. Representatives confirmed the cause of death as complications from congestive heart failure.
Mark Beaven, co-founder of Advanced Alternative Media, confirmed the passing. Industry peers noted Katsis’s foundational impact across multiple commercial music sectors.
Early Career and Chicago Foundations
Katsis began his career in Chicago, cutting his teeth on the Northern Illinois University concert board. At age 23, he discovered and assumed management duties for the industrial group Ministry.
In the mid-1980s, Katsis worked as an A&R executive at Trax Precision Records while operating as a booking agent. In this capacity, he organized early New York and London performances for Chicago house music pioneers including Marshall Jefferson and Adonis.
Los Angeles Relocation and The Firm
Relocating to Los Angeles in the early 1990s, Katsis expanded his roster to include alternative and rock acts such as The Cramps, General Public, and Material Issue.
In 1997, Katsis became a partner at entertainment management firm The Firm alongside CEO Jeff Kwatinetz. Within this corporate structure, he managed a high-profile, cross-genre roster.
Cross-Genre Roster Management
During his tenure at The Firm, Katsis managed an unusually broad spectrum of artists. His portfolio ranged from pop acts like the Backstreet Boys and Enrique Iglesias to heavy alternative, nu-metal, and hip-hop acts including Korn, Limp Bizkit, Snoop Dogg, and Ice Cube. His roster also included 30 Seconds to Mars and OneRepublic.
Prospect Park and Later Ventures
In 2008, Katsis partnered with Jeff Kwatinetz and Rich Frank to launch Prospect Park. The venture absorbed many of his previous client relationships.
Through Prospect Park, Katsis managed established rock and alternative acts, including the Smashing Pumpkins, Jane’s Addiction, Morrissey, and Audioslave.
Industry Legacy
Katsis’s career bridged the 1980s underground industrial scene with major corporate management structures of the subsequent decades. His operational footprint remains defined by his capacity to navigate both niche subcultures and commercial mainstream markets.
