Club Passim in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has scheduled its 28th annual Campfire Festival for Labor Day weekend, running from September 4 through September 7. The four-day event brings together more than 100 artists from New England and beyond for a continuous showcase of live performances at the venue’s Harvard Square location.
Established in 1998 to counter a traditionally slow booking weekend, the festival has evolved into a foundational programming pillar for the institution, serving as a dual platform for emerging musical acts and veteran performers.
Operational Structure and Genre Diversity
The festival utilizes a scheduling matrix that accommodates solo acts, small ensembles, full bands, and collaborative songwriter circles. The stylistic breadth spans folk, rock, indie, bluegrass, Americana, Celtic, and rhythm and blues traditions.
Matt Smith, managing director at Club Passim, noted that the intensive schedule is designed to maximize audience exposure to diverse musical styles within a compressed operational window.
Historical Continuity and Strategic Positioning
Originally launched under the title "On the Cutting Edge of the Campfire," the event maintains its mission to introduce rising talent while preserving space for established artists, reinforcing the venue’s role as a cultural anchor in Harvard Square.
Collaborative formats remain a core component of the schedule, encouraging spontaneous creative partnerships through songwriter circles where musicians exchange material.
Program Highlights and Ticketing
Key programming includes a Sunday evening performance by Chilean Patagonia-born multi-instrumentalist and composer Nicolas Emden, concluding on Monday evening with a collaborative songwriters-in-the-round set featuring Helen Kuhar, Naomi Westwater, Almira Ara, and Anand Nayak.
Single-day and multi-day passes are available through the organization’s official website.
