WBO Bantamweight Glory and a Historic World Record Knockout
His strategic progression continued in the bantamweight ranks, where Tete first secured the interim World Boxing Organization (WBO) championship with a victory over Arthur Villanueva. This interim title positioned him decisively for full sanctioning body elevation. The WBO subsequently recognized Tete as the undisputed world champion, affirming his dominance at 118 pounds.
Tete’s first defense as the full WBO bantamweight champion etched his name into boxing history with one of the sport’s most astounding kinetic finishes. Facing Siboniso Gonya, Tete delivered a knockout victory with the first punch thrown, immediately upon the opening bell. This instantaneous defeat established a globally recognized official world record for the fastest knockout ever recorded in a world championship boxing match, cementing ‘Last Born’s’ legacy as an elite and explosive competitor.

The untimely death of this revered two-division champion creates a profound void within South African sports and the international boxing fraternity. As the South African Police Service intensifies its investigation into the Mdantsane shooting, the global boxing community mourns the loss of a talent whose career was defined by resilience, strategic ambition, and historic achievements. Further updates on the homicide inquiry are anticipated as law enforcement proceeds with its critical forensic and community-based investigations.
