He suffered a fatal heart attack at his home in Washington, Virginia, as confirmed by his wife, Alma Viator, and Rappahannock County Sheriff Connie Compton.
According to Viator, the cardiac event occurred while Jones was resting at home in preparation to watch an Atlanta Braves baseball game. Born in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, on August 30, 1941, Jones constructed a career trajectory that crossed stage performance, feature films, network television, and federal legislative service.

Jones began his professional acting career in theater before making his feature film debut as Douglas in the 1972 production Together For Days. He followed this with a role as Fred in the 1975 film Moonrunners, a precursor project that presaged his signature television casting.
In 1979, Jones secured his defining television role as Cooter Davenport on The Dukes of Hazzard, a character he portrayed throughout the series’ original run until 1985.
