Athletics Prospect Ryan Lasko Undergoes Spinal Surgery Following Mid-Game Collision

Oakland Athletics prospect Ryan Lasko is in stable condition following surgery to treat a C6-C7 vertebra fracture. The injury occurred during a collision with teammate Devin Taylor while both were pursuing a fly ball in the outfield during a Midland RockHounds game.

The impact resulted in significant spinal swelling and a temporary loss of sensation in Lasko’s lower extremities. He was stabilized on-field by athletic trainers Noah Huff and Audy Merrick before being transported to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano. Medical staff are monitoring his progress as he begins the recovery process.

Athletics General Manager David Forst expressed the organization’s full support, stating, “I’ve been in touch with Ryan’s mom, Patti, to pass along the organization’s support and to let her know that all of us throughout our system have them in our thoughts and prayers.”

As the No. 18 prospect in the Athletics’ farm system, Lasko’s health remains the primary concern. Beyond the human impact, the injury forces the organization to recalibrate its internal development timelines and roster management strategies. The incident underscores the inherent physical risks of professional baseball and highlights the critical importance of emergency medical protocols, which were executed effectively by on-field personnel.
