The Hays Indians and Hutchinson Salthawks: A Clash of Titans in High School Football’s Version of the Biblical David vs. Goliath That Will Test Community Allegiances and Rivalries in Kansas
WICHITA, Kan. – The upcoming matchup between the Hays Indians and Hutchinson Salthawks is more than just a high school football game; it embodies the fierce rivalries and community pride that are even more intense within the arena of regional playoffs. Set against the backdrop of a picturesque Friday night under the lights, this showdown is as much about athletic prowess as it is about the storied histories of two teams, each boasting impressive records this season at 7-2.
The Hays Indians and their head coach, Tony Crough, have garnered attention for their unexpected performance this season. With key victories, including a stunning upset against Derby in Week 1, the Indians have cemented their position as a team that can defy expectations. Their success heavily hinges on the formidable talent of running back Holden Lind, who has amassed over 1,500 rushing yards this season. Lind’s prowess on the field is a significant factor, but it’s the offensive line that truly amplifies his potential. The imposing front line has allowed Lind to not only find gaps but also to break tackles and increase yardage in crucial moments.
Crough reflected on the tight contests that have defined their season, explaining how the experience gained from these games might prove invaluable as they enter the playoffs. “We could very well be undefeated right now. We could also very well have about five or six losses,” he commented, shedding light on the fine margins that separate victory from defeat in high school football. This unique blend of experience and resilience could give the Indians an edge in the high-pressure scenario of playoff football.
On the other side of the field stands the Hutchinson Salthawks, equally represented by a 7-2 record, who come into this game with a level of momentum that cannot be ignored. Their recent 34-0 victory over Emporia is indicative of the offensive firepower and defensive fortitude they have developed over the latter half of the season. Four consecutive wins have solidified their confidence, as they look to avenge last year’s playoff defeat against Hays, where they were eliminated 28-0. The theme of vengeance will undoubtedly add an extra layer of intensity to this clash.
Hutchinson’s head coach, Mike Vernon, is acutely aware of the challenges posed by Hays, particularly the unstoppable force that is Holden Lind. “We’re going to play hard up front. We’re going to have to tackle extremely well,” Vernon emphasized, recognizing that tackling Lind and disrupting his rhythm will be crucial for a successful outing. The emphasis on “filling in the gaps” and ensuring physicality in their gameplay illustrates Hutchinson’s preparation to counter Hays’ strategic advantages.
The Salthawks’ defensive players, such as senior linebacker Jackson Anderson, echo this sentiment, focusing their preparations on physicality and technique. Their collective mindset of keeping up the momentum while maintaining focus on the fundamentals highlights the Salthawks’ approach to a high-stakes game. The combination of raw power in their offensive and defensive lines, alongside a tactical mindset, will be pivotal in their efforts to stop Lind and the Hays offense.
The historical context adds another dimension to this rivalry, as high school football in Kansas carries deep roots and a strong sense of community identity. Schools not only compete for titles but also for the boasting rights within their respective towns. The implications of winning resonate beyond the scoreboard, influencing community pride and engagement. The atmosphere at Gowans Stadium will be electric, as fans from both sides rally to support their teams, turning the event into a communal celebration of hope, rivalry, and local pride.
As both teams prepare for kickoff at 7 p.m. this Friday, the anticipation grows. The stakes are high, and both Hays and Hutchinson have something to prove—not only in terms of their playoff aspirations but also in establishing dominance over a historic rival. In the grand theatre of high school football, where victories are cherished and losses can haunt communities, this match is set to captivate fans and players alike.
Whether it’s the experienced gritty play of the Indians or the revenge-fueled ambition of the Salthawks, this clash will undoubtedly leave a mark in the annals of Kansas high school football. The grit, determination, and sheer unpredictability of the game promise to deliver a night of unforgettable action, with the allure of the playoffs serving as a powerful motivator for both teams to raise their game to new heights. Each play will be a battle, each yard contested fiercely, as two proud teams converge in a testament to the spirit of high school football.

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – It’s now time to talk about our Game of the Week! The Hays Indians will make the trip up to Hutchinson this Friday to face the Salthawks in regionals.
Both teams come into this week 7-2, with the only two Hays losses coming against Manhattan and Great Bend.
A big reason for Hays’ success is running back Holden Lind. At first team all-state, he’s already passed the 1,500 rushing yard mark, with a very strong offensive line in front of him.
The Indians shocked the world in Week 1 with a huge upset against Derby, and they look to continue to shock the state of Kansas with another deep playoff run.
Hay’s head coach, Tony Crough, says that with the way this season has gone, the experience has paid off with his group winning a lot of tight contests.
“We could very well be undefeated right now. We could also very well have about five or six losses. Even the games, those games we won early, those one-score games, we had three wins early on that came down to the last possession of the game. And it came down to one play basically to win or lose the game. And so the experience of having all these kids that have kind of been through some of the stuff before, they know what it’s like to play in those tight games,” he said.
Just like Hays, the Salthawks enter regionals with a 7-2 record. Last week, they took down Emporia 34-0 and are riding plenty of momentum with their four straight wins.
The last time these two clashed was a season ago in the playoffs, and Hutchinson will certainly have revenge on its mind. Hays knocked Hutch out of the playoffs after an 8-2 year in sectionals, 28-0.
Lind will once again provide plenty of challenges, but it won’t be something the Salthawks aren’t ready for.
“Keep doing what we’ve been doing. Fill in the gaps, hitting hard like we’ve been. I think we have a good chance of stopping them if we can get our hands on the D-linemen. Take them out of the equation. We have a good chance to stop them,” Hutchinson senior linebacker Jackson Anderson said.
“Just doing what we’ve been doing this season, focusing on just little things in practice, just right steps, right movements, just in every circumstance,” Hutchinson senior offensive lineman Kylan Mendoza said.
“We’re going to play hard up front. We’re going to have to tackle extremely well. And if we can do that, I think that we’ll be in a good spot. But yeah, they’re a good football team, and he’s [Lind] a good football player, and you can’t talk about him without the offensive line, and then they just do a phenomenal job. So we’re going to have to make sure that we play hard and we tackle well,” Hutchinson head football coach Mike Vernon said.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Gowans Stadium.
